メッセージ

足下の土をこねて、形にして、焼く、という作業を、人は分かっている範囲で一万年以上前からやっているそうです。おそらく人類の最も古いテクノロジーであり、 芸術の一つです。

地球の一部である土をもらって形にした器は、食と直結しています。命の水を運ぶには、何か入れ物が必要です。他の動物に食べられないように食物を保管しておく入れ物も必要です。食べるために煮炊きする器も必要になってきます。

 

器は、言うまでもなく生活必需品です。

 

ではモノが入るのならなんでも良いのかといえば、そうではないと私は思っています。

縄文土器を見ると、別の何かを感じます。見た目の色や形、器を手に持って口に直接つける日本人は、手取りや重さ、手触りも無意識のうちに感じています。

いろいろ感じながら、考えながら、使いながら、また少しずつ変化しながら。自分ではわからないうちに見えない何かに影響されて変わってきたところもあるでしょう。そうやって今日まで、器をつくり続けてきました。 

 

器は高温で何時間も焼き続けます。そうして焼かれた土は、一度焼いてしまうと、もう二度と土に還ることはありません。割れてもパーツはそのままです。そのことを意識すると、無駄に焼くことがとても罪なことのように思えてきます。

 

漢字では「人」と「良」を合わせて「食」になります。食べることで人は良くなる。食材選びはもちろんですが、器の役割もかなり重要です。毎日毎食のことなので、その積み重ねは、知らない間にその人の感性、そして人生に影響してくると思います。

About Clay

Ever since I first made pottery, I have liked Shiramizu no Ara and Akamizu no Ara, which contains iron, and have been using them for many years. They are a blend of Saijo clay and Shigaraki clay, and are characterized by their thick texture and excellent heat retention. I also often use semi-porcelain clay for thin, delicate pottery.

About the kiln

We fire our pieces in kerosene-fueled kilns, which are now rare. Unlike electric kilns that can be controlled by machines, the same clay and glaze will produce slightly different colors depending on the location in the kiln and the firing method. It takes time and effort to read the temperature differences inside the kiln and change what you put in, but that's also what makes it fun.

About the glaze

The main color is a different blue each season, inspired by the sea and sky of Takehara. The strong indigo color "Japan Blue" is made by adding bamboo ash glaze to gosu, the grayish blue of the deep sea seen when peering out at the sea from the pier, "Grand Bleu," and the deep "Vintage Denim Blue." Along with semi-matt white and original black glaze, we have selected colors that go well with ingredients.

About the design

As we created our products while thinking about easy-to-use shapes, we came up with a number of standard shapes. We often hear from customers that when they actually pick up and use our products, they notice the little details, such as the curve of the mug handle, the rounded edge under the pot's spout, and the depth of the noodle bowl that makes it easy to hold and eat from, and that this makes them want to buy more. We aim to create shapes that are a part of everyday life and that make customers want to use them again and again.

いわかわのりこ Noriko Iwakawa

Born in Hiroshima Prefecture, currently living in Takehara City. Runs "Toyobo Fudo", which creates tableware that can be used every day without hesitation and supports people's lives and food. After graduating from the ceramics course of the art department of a junior college, he worked as an office worker, helped with fittings and furniture production, lived in the countryside in Hiroshima and Kumamoto, and managed a cafe gallery. In addition, he has been involved in ceramics for over 35 years, holding solo exhibitions at department stores and group exhibitions at galleries. Since 2004, he has also started activities to convey the joy of making pottery through pottery classes and pottery experiences in the Takehara City Town Preservation District. Many people come to enjoy the handmade snack time after work. In 2021, he will obtain the qualification of a clinical arts therapist and will also start teaching with the aim of regaining motivation and confidence in life through pottery making. It is also a tradition to make graduation gifts for local elementary schools. He will continue to work hard on his production activities and continue to deliver tableware that people want to use every day, tableware that is like family, and tableware that will become a companion as a potter. His special skills are sign language, calligraphy, dressing, carpentry, and making pain de campagne. He loves animals and lives with his studio's mascot cat, Soseki, and a rescue dog named Matsuri. Soseki is also popular on Mitsuaki Iwago's TV show, and he is the head of the Hiroshima Prefecture Backstreet Tourism Division.
